Description

This activity aims at assisting PhD students in the field of microbiology to acquire practical skills in research data management. Open Research Data (ORD) skills are becoming more and more relevant in the field of microbiology with the acquisition of large-scale datasets, imaging, culture collections, sequence data, etc. The workshop activity will cover four elements taught by the Research Data Steward of Univ. of Neuchatel: -

  • Conceiving a Data Management Plan for a research project/grant application
  • How to organize scientific datasets, files, storage, metadata
  • Documenting scientific datasets for the public, scientific community
  • Sharing research data on public repositories according to the field-specific requirements.

The workshop will include introductory talks on the different subjects, practical activities for the PhD students to work on their own or public datasets.

This workshop will address data sharing and data management practices for future researchers in microbiology.

On the first morning, we will explain the theoretical basis of Open Research Data, covering the history of the movement, the importance of data management, metadata, and the FAIR principles. In the afternoon, students will present their research projects, the data they collect, and the challenges they face with regard to data management and sharing.

The second day will be a hands-on workshop. Students will bring their own data and go through the curation and documentation process to make it open and FAIR, under the trainer's supervision. We will then introduce some of the main repositories for data deposition and demonstrate how to use them.
