Mitochondrial dysfunctions in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)

NAFLD is becoming a leading cause of end-stage liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is becoming the most frequent indication for liver transplantation. NAFLD is a spectrum comprising the indolent non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), the progressive non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis due to NASH. Notably, the transition from NAFL to NASH is the most crucial step related to the development of severe conditions. However, molecular mechanisms causing the progression from simple steatosis to NASH are not understood. So, in this project, we're going to study the mitochondrial dysfunctions in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
