Summary of thesis

Modern animal food production depends on the use of antibiotics. Livestock might therefore constitute a reservoir of antibiotic resistance transmittable to farmers and via contaminated meet and manure to consumers and the environment.

The aim of our study is to examine the developing resistome of pigs from birth until slaughter. We will do this by longitudinal sampling of the same pig at 3 live stages and following 2 approaches A) is a culture- indedpendent functional metagenomics approach.

Part B) is a culture dep. Screening for ESBL producing and Colistin resistant strains in the fecal material of the pigs.

A future aim is to analyze if farm workers and animals share resistance genes in their fecal material which would indicate for zoonotic transmission.

Questionnaires will help us to evaluate the consequences of the usage of antibiotics on the farms as well as risk factors of transmission.
