Summary of thesis

Environmental pollution is one of the most relevant challenges of our time in terms of potential harmful effects on biodiversity and human health. For several years the role of bacteria in degradation of pollutants has been studied. Specific strains capable to degrade certain contaminants have been isolated and their catabolic activity has been studied in laboratory, but their benefits in the environment are unpredictable or anecdotic.

Two years ago the seventh Framework European Project BACSIN was started “to improve the rational use of bacterial catalytic activities, in particular for targeted pollution treatment, removal and prevention”. The goal of my PhD project within this larger program is to improve our understanding of the environmental behaviour of bacterial strains degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols.
