| Description | Guided tour of the diagnostic laboratories of the CHUV: PhD Students from the CUSO program probably visited a doctor once when they were really sick. However, they don't really know what happens with their sample(s) (urine, blood, ...). In order for the doctor to make a decision about treatment, the pathogens responsible for the disease/infection need to be identified and characterized. The visit to the CHUV diagnostic laboratories will inform the students about the current methods and challenges in rapid diagnosis occurring on a daily basis in the clinics. The visit will be divided in two parts: A theoretical morning where the different sectors of the CHUV medical microbiology laboratory will be introduced, ranging from culture, to NGS sequence, including microscopy, serology and PCR. Participants will be introduced to the routine activities as well as some of the R&D projects taking place at the CHUV diagnostic lab. The afternoon will consist of a visit of the different laboratories, including the MAC (Microscopy, Antibiotic, Resistance, Culture), the SER (Serology), the DMMB (Molecular Diagnosis Mycobaterium Biosafety), and the GEN (Microbial Genomics and Metagenomics) laobratories.
