Description

Science communication is an essential part of research, connecting science and society through sharing information and raising awareness. In the current context of global climate change, biodiversity loss, and political unrest, science communication skills are more important than ever.

While PhD candidates gain communication skills within their highly specialized academic context, this generally doesn't extend to communicating with a broader audience, or engaging in scientific outreach to the general public. We offer a course designed to equip participants with the skills to educate non-specialist audiences on complex scientific concepts. Focussing on topics relating to sustainability, participants will produce teaching materials and activities for 16-18 yr old students, either based on their own research, or the field of sustainability more generally.

During the 3-day course, you will be trained to select appropriate and relevant background information, peer-reviewed results, examples or controversies, and transform them into materials that effectively communicate cutting-edge research while fostering critical and scientific thinking.

Through 'learning by doing', participants will contextualize the significance of their own, or other relevant research within the transition towards a sustainable society. Previous in-depth knowledge in the field of sustainability is not required.

The scientific quality and relevance of the teaching activities and materials produced will be evaluated collectively by the course participants, while their pedagogical quality will be guided and assessed by the course instructor – an expert in teaching science. Following the course, the output produced will be made available for use in public education, allowing participants to put their communication skills to use directly.
