Animal and plant life histories are shaped by natural selection, sexual selection, and intended or unintended artificial selection. They are also often very plastic and dependent on specific environmental conditions. Anthropogenic changes of the environment can therefore affect life histories and their frequencies within natural population in various ways. This is an important problem in conservation biology, but we still lack a sufficient understanding of the environmental and genetic basis of many life-history forms. It is, for example, largely unclear why the migratory river- and the lake-dwelling forms of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) in Switzerland have been dramatically declining over the last 20 years and far more so than the resident form S. trutta morpha fario. We will discuss such problems in the context of current environmental changes and wildlife management.
