How to give a scientific presentation: talks and posters (2011)

Objectives

The participants learn the essential features of oral and poster presentations that contribute to making a long-lasting, professional impression. In a half-day workshop the participants practice their presentations, are able to critically review the presentations of their peers and to give each other feedback.
All participants find out what they do well (strengths) and gather ideas for what to work on next when presenting their research work.
 

Content

Preparation and structure of a scientific presentation: talks and posters;
Delivery of "powerful presentations";
Performance: body language and contact to the audience;
Use of visual aids, especially beamer presentations;
Constructive feedback for colleagues.
 

Structure of the course

Friday 4th; Input talk on oral presentations and posters (all participants*)

10.30-12.30: Guidelines for the design and production of scientific posters; oral presentations of posters
13.00-15.00: Essential features of professional oral presentations: audience-orientation, creating and maintaining audience interest, signposting, use of body language, design and use of visual aids

Transfer period for preparing a short talk OR a poster about their research work and implementing the essential elements of professional presentations.

Workshop

Half-day workshop (4h) in groups of max. 6 participants with videotaping and feedback: poster presentations (three minutes each) or oral presentations (eight minutes each) by the participants.

Each participant attends one of the 2 workshops.
