Description

Systems toxicology is a cross-disciplinary scientific domain, that aims to understand the mechanisms of substance interactions with biological components in a living system. It combines classical toxicology with computational modelling and advanced analytical tools where large-scale data are used to simulate and predict adverse outcomes. This project intends to give an overview of different aspects of systems toxicology ranging from identifying relevant resources and technologies for data acquisition, to describing toxicological pathway concepts.

Regulatory considerations in Systems Toxicology

Systems Toxicology is a one-day course that covers the cross-disciplinary scientific domain of Systems Toxicology. A domain that aims to understand the mechanisms of substance interactions with biological components in a living system. We will introduce various aspects of Systems Toxicology including a real-life case of human poisoning, namely of Victor Yuschenko. We will also cover the design and assay development for in-vitro drug toxicity testing and conduct a visit to an assay development and screening facility (READS) where a lot of novel and interesting data is being produced. Also, since a lot of data already exists, we will also give an overview of available public databases, how to navigate compound related data and how to gain access to available data using semantic web technologies. The day will finish with a presentation on regulatory considerations in Systems Toxicology that is the guarantor of safer drugs, safe environment and food.
