The objective of the workshop is to give an introduction to macroecology and biogeography. Although special focus will be on microorganisms, the workshop should be of interest to a broad audience as speakers also include botanists and zoologists.

The workshop addresses a broad range of topics: General concepts in biogeography and macroecology: assessing microbial diversity using molecular vs morphological tools, dispersal mechanisms, metacommunity dynamics, and implications for biodiversity conservation. Patterns and drivers of aquatic and terrestrial microbial biogeography from local to global scales in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems: exploring the distribution patterns of different taxonomic and functional groups of organisms (bacteria, fungi, protists, micro-metazoan, etc.) and their drivers.

Invited lecturers cover these different topics, and the workshop will therefore be of interest to a diverse range of people. The list of speakers includes both local (UniNe, CUSO) and international experts in different aspects of macroecology and microbial biogeography.

The workshop includes 1) frontal lectures/presentation by invited speakers (concepts, examples of research questions, current methods and debates)
2) presentations and posters by participants (PhD students / post-docs)
3) practical session to observe some of the organisms discussed in the workshop
4) open discussion on key topics (methodological, open questions/ current challenges) If you are presenting a talk or poster, this will be registered on your certificate for extra ECTS.
