Summary of thesis | Synthetic biology to understand gene regulatory networks and their evolution
Gene regulatory networks are essential for the processing of information that cells receive continuously. Synthetic biology allows us to create novel networks by assembling well-characterised parts. We are therefore no longer limited to studying networks in few well-studied organisms where influences of genetic background or environment may be difficult to control. Instead, we can construct and modify gene regulatory networks to understand their mechanisms, properties, and evolution. We use this bottom-up synthetic biology approach by combining wet lab experiments and computational modelling to test hypotheses addressing a variety of pivotal questions in modern biology. |
