Title | Lay Communication in Microbiology |
Dates | 11-12 décembre 2018 |
Organizer(s) | |
Speakers | Pilar Junier, UNINE |
Description | The ability to communication science to a general public and to engage a new generation of scientist into connecting with society is a major challenge that needs to be addressed. Global initiatives such as the Small World Initiative and Tiny Earth, are examples of initiatives in which microbiology is used as a channel to connect with the general public. The overall topic discussed is the societal issue of antibiotic resistance. Thanks to these initiatives, a network of scientist and instructors is now focused on spreading the information on the topic, engaging with the public and working on crowdsourcing for the discovery of new antibiotics from soil. Giving PhD students the opportunity to learn from the experience of these scientists will add value to our doctoral program. In this 2-day activity, a leading scientist working on the Small World Initiative and Tiny Earth initiatives in Spain, as well as local scientist engaged in Lay communication will present their experience and discuss with the students in order to create a blue print applicable in Switzerland. |
