Description

In this one-week course the participants will obtain an introduction in working with the increasingly ubiquitous (animal) movement data.

The course will combine theory and practical parts in a dense working programme.

On the first day, the participants learn about the aspects of data collection in animal ecology and how the way data is collected influences the range of questions that can be addressed with them. Also, all participants will obtain a quick update on programming in R and the resources required to follow the course in terms of developing environment and libraries and packages as well as the details of the object definitions that characterise movement data, compared to other kinds of data.

On the second day, the students learn about movement from a trajectory perspective, where locations through time can give much information about the processes that underlie movement of animals in their natural environment.

On day three the participants will be translating movement in space use and obtain an «area» perspective on movement. At the end of the day, participants will be invited to a social dinner with the organisers and the speakers.

Day four is dedicated to contextualising movement data in the environmental domains with learning much about how to connect location and time with remote sensing information, which also will include visualisation of movement data.

Day five finally will address resource use questions and statistical approaches around how to infer from movement data the ecological relationships that govern the processes ultimately giving rise to the emergence of movement per-se.

The participants are expected to work on the data sets prepared by the instructors as the time available will not suffice to bring own material. However, they will certainly be capable to analyse and handle data they have collected on their own after the course.
