Description

This two-day course for intermediate R users focuses on the tidyverse, a collection of R packages for data science.

We are going to focus on the two key packages dplyr ("The grammar of graphics") and ggplot2 ("The grammar of graphics") plus several more such as purrr (enhanced functional programming), tidyr (helpers to create tidy data sets), readr (fast & friendly data import/export), tibble (modern data frames), lubridate (easy and fast parsing of date-times) and forcats (tools for working with categorial variables).

The course is a mixture between brief presentations, demonstrations (on-screen, using R and RStudio) and supervised exercises ("learning by doing").

Course completion requirements:

  • Attendance - Presence and active participation is required during the entire course.
  • Homework - Participants are required to hand in a homework consisting of several exercises before November 26.

Please, make sure your have a day after the course for the completion of the homework!

!Requirements for attending and completing the workshop!

Familiarity with R before attending the workshop or previous attendance of an introductory course to R. Regular practice with R extending beyond the course is preferred.
Bring your own laptop to the workshop with recent versions of R and R-Studio installed. Make sure that your laptop is properly connecting to the University of Lausanne or eduroam WLAN.

Travel expenses:

PhD students of the DPEE are eligible for the reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train (half-fare card, and 2nd class).

The online reimbursement system is now in place, so once the course is over you will be able to request the reimbursement via MyCUSO, without sending the paperwork to the coordinator. More information: Reimbursement

Accommodation:

Please contact the coordinator of the doctoral program (ecologie-evolution(at)cuso.ch) BEFORE the beginning of the course. NO reimbursement of accommodation without the coordinator of the doctoral program agreement prior of the course. In case of overnight stay, please post the original tickets and original bills along with the reimbursement form to:
