Activities recommended by the Doctoral Program in Microbial Sciences

International Symposium of the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI):

University of Bern,  January 29-30, 2015.

For many years there has been close collaboration in a variety of fields between the University of Bern, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), and the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI). The collaboration in the fields of virology and immunology is being increased by merging the former Institute of Veterinary Virology (IVV) of the University of Bern with the IVI, an administrative unit of the FSVO. Since January 1st 2014, the IVI operates with sites in Mittelhäusern and Bern in cooperation with the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern. For this reason and to continue the tradition of a series of successful symposia held by the IVV (2002 „Meeting on Host-Pathogen Interactions at the Molecular Level“; 2004 „Meeting on Host-Pathogen Interaction Shaped by Evolution“; 2007 „Host-Pathogen Interaction: The Role of Innate Immunity“; 2009 „Interferon & Infection“; and 2011 “Host-Pathogen Interaction: Persistence in Viral Infections”) we are organising an international symposium on the topic “Virology and Immunology: viral contagious animal diseases and zoonosis”.

The scientific programme covers many aspects of zoonosis, virology and immunology.
Plenary and invited talks will be given by renowned national and international experts:

-          Prof. Thomas Mettenleiter, President of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, and Head of the Institute of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology, Insel Riems, Germany,

-          Prof. Christian Drosten, Institute of Virology, Universitätsklinikum Bonn, Germany,

-          Dr. Isabelle Schwartz-Cornil, Equipe Vaccins et Immunité Anti-Virale chez les Mammifères, Centre de Recherche INRA, Jouy-en-Josas, France,

-          Prof. Mathias Ackermann, Institute of Virology, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zürich,

-          Prof. Stephen Leib,  Head of the Biology Division of the Spiez Laboratory,

-          PD Dr. Philippe Plattet, Division of Neurological Sciences, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern
