Description | In many environments that are interesting to us as microbiologists, microbes do not live in isolation, but rather in communities composed of many species that interact and co-evolve by adapting to each other. Understanding these communities and disentangling the ecological and evolutionary dynamics within them is vital to controlling ecosystems, such as those in the soil, in our guts, those used to clean pollutants or those infecting patients in hospitals. In this workshop, we will have seven experts from the field of microbial ecology and evolution from around the world, who all take very different approaches to studying questions related to microbial communities. They will be available to discuss the future of this field with you: What are the big questions? How can we address them? What is the current state-of-the-art? And what are the next steps forward? By the end of the workshop it should be clearer to you as a participant how your research can add a building block to the field and get us closer to understanding and controlling complex microbial communities. Program: 13:00 - 13:30 Welcome and guest introductions 13:30 - 13:45 Who is who -- short interactive session to introduce participants 13:45 - 14:15 Brainstorming for the big questions and methods 14:15 - 15:00 Group work -- write a grant 15:00 - 15:30 Coffee break 15:30 - 16:00 Presentations 16:00 - 16:30 Round table discussion and Q&A 16:30 - 16:45 Conclusions and wrap-up. The invited experts will present their work the next day (November 6th) during the DMF Impromptu Symposium. Registration: Flyer DMF Impromtu |
