Description

The field of medical microbiology faces numerous challenges, including the development of novel diagnostic methods and therapeutics to combat severe viral and bacterial infections. A particular challenge in current clinical microbiology is further represented by increasing resistance of pathogenic microbes to antibiotics and the spread of resistance in the hospital and community level. The present workshop for Ph.D. students of all areas of microbial sciences will give an overview of the current challenges at the forefront of basic and clinical research in medical microbiology. Of particular importance will be the problematic of antibiotic resistance from the standpoint of diagnostics, drug development, and treatment. Presentations by leading experts will be complemented by an interactive visit of the state-of-the-art diagnostics laboratories of the Lausanne University Hospital and a round table highlighting career options for Ph.D. in microbial sciences in medical microbiology.
