Description

Species within assemblages are not independent from each other but interact in the form of ecological networks. Because of biotic interactions such as mutualism, competition or trophic interactions, the persistence of a species in an assemblage depends on the dynamics of co-occurring species. While the structures of ecological networks have been largely described for particular sites or regions, few studies have compared the structure of ecological networks along spatial or environmental gradients. Nevertheless, we currently lack a good perspective on what properties of networks can be compared. Integrating ecological and evolutionary factors together with geographical distribution of species is essential to get comprehensive insight into the processes shaping the structure of ecological networks along gradients.

This CUSO-sponsored workshop will bring together renowned researchers on ecological networks, who will present state-of-the-art knowledge on this topic, from both theoretical and experimental angles. We will tackle conceptual frameworks and case-studies and address the following questions: How different is the structure of networks across ecosystems? How can we compare network structure along spatial and environmental gradient? What are the implications for the functioning of ecosystem? The course is aimed at students with a general interest in population, community, conservation ecology, as well as system biologists and evolutionary biologists. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their work in a poster.
